Sun, chill & happy dogs at Lake Maggiore in Switzerland
To get to a really fantastically situated sandy beach, you don't have to go far to the sea, but only to Lake Maggiore.
Probably the only sandy beach on Lake Maggiore can be found at Camping Miralago near Ascona. The operator has created a large sandy beach with comfortable sunbeds, illuminated palm trees and a beach bar on the sundowner lakeshore. Here, guests can relax under palm trees and dive into the clear waters of Lake Maggiore. There is a beach volleyball court for some exercise and the dog beach next door for cooling off the four-legged friends on hot days. Those who prefer to relax by the pool can choose between the large freshwater pool and the new saltwater relax pool at the old villa. From both you have an excellent view of the lake and in the comfortable lounge chairs or at the pool bar you can enjoy the "dolce far niente".
Most guests enjoy the dreamlike sunset view of the lake and the mountains in the evening on the lakeside - beautiful when the lights in Locarno and Ascona light up on the mountain slopes. Afterwards, the restaurant on the square "Al Fienile" spoils you with Italian specialities and, of course, pizza. Those who like to cook for themselves can choose from many organic products and Italian and Ticino wines in the well-stocked shop. Fresh bread rolls and croissants provide the perfect start to the day in the morning and there is free WiFi throughout the square.
If you want to make an excursion to nearby Locarno, you can take the boat from Tenero to the centre free of charge from June to September. The Ticino Ticket is particularly practical. The mobility card gives you free travel on public transport and discounts on mountain railways, boat trips and the main attractions in Ticino throughout the canton. For the more athletic, there is a 7 km cycle path along the beautiful lake. Here you pass the good Approdo restaurant, with terrace and view of the Tenero marina. Continue on to the centre of Locarno. The Piazza Grande becomes a meeting place for international stars and starlets during the Locarno Film Festival, and Ascona offers a special highlight for music lovers with the JazzAscona Festival. Continuing along the shore, you reach fashionable Ascona with its wonderful lakeside promenade. Here you should definitely stop off at the Ristorante Osteria Nostrana - because here it tastes just like at mum's house. Also highly recommended is the Ristorante "Easy" or the Ristorante "Seven", both with a wonderful terrace overlooking the lake. Camping Miralago is ideally situated for discovering nature. Particularly beautiful destinations are in the Valle Maggia and the Valle Verzasca.
One of Switzerland's most famous places of pilgrimage can also be found just above Locarno. You can hike up to the Madonna del Sasso church on two different paths or take the "funicolare" up. The excursion is rewarded with beautiful frescoes in the interior of the church and a wonderful panoramic view over the Mediterranean gardens, which thrive thanks to 2,300 hours of sunshine a year. This special climate, in the warmest place in Switzerland, and the many possibilities for activities in the immediate vicinity, as well as the quality of the site, make Camping Miralago a particularly attractive year-round destination - a true "pearl" on Lake Maggiore.
